Sotheby’s Old Master and British Works on Paper online auction this September presents a fantastic opportunity to acquire affordable drawings and watercolours, with estimates starting at 100 GBP, by European and British Masters, ranging from the 16th to the 19th century. Among the diverse array on offer we have a group of early Italian drawings inspired by great Masters, including Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto and Giulio Romano. In the 18th century we have picturesque and charming scenes of Venice by Carlo Grubacs and Giacomo Guardi. Representing the French school are attractive figure studies by Jean Baptiste Pillement and a beautiful study of foliage by a follower of Claude Lorrain. For Dutch 19th century enthusiasts we have an atmospheric landscape by Hendrik Gerrit ten Cate and a highlight of the Flemish school is a striking portrait of a standing man that is attributed to Sir Anthony van Dyck.
The British works date to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a period often described as ‘the golden age’. Highlights include landscapes by Jonathan Skelton, Francis Towne, Paul Sandby and David Cox, and figure studies by Thomas Rowlandson, John Russell, Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir Francis Grant.
