NEAR DUNGENESS

signed; also signed, titled, dated 1933 and inscribed on the reverse

collage, watercolour, gouache, pen and ink and wash on paper

40 by 52.5cm.; 15¾ by 20¾in.

The sheet is adhered to the mount with three strips of adhesive tape at the upper edge. The upper edge is slightly deckled. There is some lifting to the corners of some collaged elements but largely these appear securely adhered and all intact. The sheet undulates slightly in keeping with the Artist's working methods and materials. There is a tear and associated small loss to the lower left corner with further small tears to the right edge and historic and repaired tears to the lower edge. There is minor rounding and further small nicks to the extreme edges. There is creasing to the sheet particularly at and towards the lower right corner. There is some staining associated with the adhesive for the collaged elements, most evident to the lamp-post at the right edge with further flecks of foxing and staining to the sheet. There are handling marks towards the edges and surface dirt in places. There are instances of surface matter and studio detritus. There is time staining to the sheet and there may be very slight fading to the pigments in places. This excepting, the work appears in good overall condition.

The work is floated and held behind glass in a gilt painted wooden frame.
