Catalogue Note

During the early 1950s, Maqbool Fida Husain's subjects were inspired by the ordinary life around him, pastoral scenes representing to him the heart of India and Indianness. Often filled with activity and movement, these works are characterised by strong and dynamic lines. Classical Jain painting as well as Basholi miniatures also influenced Husain in his use of strong and clear patches of colour in his works. The donkeys, naga (serpent), cows and grassland all convey a picture of rural Indian life, a classic theme of Husain's at this time.
