FIRST HALF 17TH CENTURY
PACING HORSE
bronze
height 6 ¼ in.; 15.7 cm., upon bronze-mounted wood rectangular socle
Sir Leon Bagrit, London;
By descent to the present owner
The present fine example of Fanelli's 'Ambling horse' is comparable to one which is at Welbeck Woodhouse from the collection of the Duke of Portland and which was ascribed to Fanelli as early as 1727 by George Vertue, the 18th century English antiquarian.
Fanelli was first recorded as working in Genoa in 1608. He remained there until 1630 at which time he went to England to work for King Charles I and was eventually named Court Sculptor to the King.
