Walter F. Altschul, New York;

Thence by descent

Walter F. Altschul was an established glove manufacturer in Prague when he was forced to flee due to the imminent Nazi invasion in the 1930s. He and his young family arrived in New York after emigrating first to London and Bolivia, South America. Mr. Altschul’s love of art and his entrepreneurial spirit led him to a new career in the art and antiques trade. Mr. Altschul first worked at Parke Bernet, specializing in Dutch and Flemish art, and later opened a gallery on Madison Avenue which he filled with old master paintings and sculpture and 19th and 20th century art, among other works. As a world traveler and long-time collector of fine art himself, Mr. Altschul amassed a substantial collection.
