Tilman was the son of Johann Tilemann, painter at the court of Lippe. He traveled through the Netherlands, Bohemia, Austria, and probably Italy, and developed a style in relation to Dutch painting of the mid-seventeenth century. Best known for portraits and genre and history paintings, Arnold Houbraken also praised his floral still lifes.
