LANDSCAPE WITH A PEASANT GUIDING HIS WIFE, SURROUNDED BY A GROUP OF CHILDREN
signed lower center: J. V. Ostade f
oil on panel
13½ by 18¾ in.; 34.3 by 47.3 cm.
The panel, which is composed of two horizontal panels, is flat, uncradled and bevelled at all four sides. The paint surface, which is in very good condition, reads well despite being beneath an old dirty and yellowed varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals scattered retouchings here and there, for example in the upper right corner in the background and along the join at the center of the left edge. Some of these have discolored and are visible to the naked eye, such as the spot near the top of the tree at center. The painting will benefit from careful cleaning and updated restoration, but can certainly hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.

From photographs, Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg has identified this as an early work by Isack van Ostade, probably dating to circa 1640. It compares in style, size, and technique to another signed and dated example by the artist, A Bagpipe Player Surrounded by Children Before a Farm House.1 A related drawing of the same composition by Ostade was formerly in the collection of Anton Schmid, Vienna.2
