Description

GIOVANNI GRUBACS

Venice 1829 - 1919

DECORATED BARGES AND FIREWORKS BY THE PUNTA DELLA DOGANA IN VENICE

oil on canvas

12¾ by 21⅝ in.; 32.4 by 54.9 cm.

Decorated barges, called galleggiante, float at the entrance to the Grand Canal in front of Santa Maria della Salute and the Punta da Dogana as fireworks are set off from the Bacino di San Marco and the Giudecca in celebration of a traditional festival such as Ascensione, Carnevale, or Redentore. Grubacs' focus is more on the moonlight and fireworks and their reflections in the water than on the famous architecture of Venice, which suggests a date for this picture in the late 19th century.
