CARLO GRUBACS | RIVA DEGLI SCHIAVONI SEEN FROM THE WEST

Carlo Grubacs painted the Riva seen from the West on several ocasions, and this view is taken from the west, looking toward the Palazzo Ducale, seen in the center right, and Santa Maria della Salute in the left distance. The pink hues in the sky suggest a warm afternoon, and the figures working and strolling on the Riva cast long, thin shadows. Grubacs made an almost identical version of this composition, in slightly more muted colors, as one of a four-part series, now in the Museo Civico, Bassano del Grappa.¹
