STUDY FOR TWO CHILDREN, BOTH HEAD AND SHOULDERS

oil on canvas

20¾ by 23¾ in.; 52.7 by 60.3 cm.

Private collection;

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 8 December 2005, lot 317;

There acquired.

The Milanese-born Cittadini traveled to Bologna in the early 1630s, when he entered the studio of Guido Reni. Although his career would ultimately take him to Rome, his portraits have a characteristically Lombard sense of realism, seen in this fresh oil sketch depicting children.
