Description
ATTRIBUTED TO ANGELO CAROSELLI
Rome 1585 - 1652
SELF-PORTRAIT WITH A CANVAS AND MAHLSTICK
oil on canvas
26¼ by 21½ in.; 66.7 by 54.6 cm.
Caroselli was apparently entirely self-taught, and his eclectic style included influences from Caravaggio, seen here in the strong contrasts and shadows, and the Bamboccianti or "low-life" painters in Rome. In addition to painting original works, he was successful as a copyist of masters like Titian and Poussin.
