Catalogue Note

Throughout the history of gemstone mining, only a small handful of mines have become synonymous with a specific kind of stone. The legendary diamond mines of the Golconda region, known for exceptionally pure white diamonds; the historic and short-lived Kashmir mines, famed for their velvety sapphires; the Mogok mines of Burma, renowned for pigeon-blood rubies; and the Muzo mines of Colombia, whose output became the gold-standard for emeralds. To that list, one can add the Argyle mine of Australia, source of some of the greatest pink and, on very rare occasions, red diamonds in the world. This one mine produces over 90% of the world’s supply of those gems, and it is set to close by 2020.

Located in a remote region of Western Australia, the Argyle mine uncovers an average of over 8 million carats of rough diamonds per year. The vast majority of that output, however, is in colors other than pink. In fact, less than 1% of their total rough output consists of pink diamonds. Of that limited output, an even more exclusive group is offered in their annual Argyle Pink Diamond Tender. For every 1 million carats of rough pink diamonds unearthed at the mine, only 1 carat of polished material will be offered at this exclusive event.

On a macro level, diamonds are exceptionally rare. They’re found only in the most remote parts of the world, deep underground, and their rarity has rightly made them the pre-eminent and most desired gemstone. In this rare fraternity, pink diamonds are among the most elusive and sought-after, comprising an infinitesimally small percentage of all diamonds. Accordingly, this bracelet is at once a beautiful jewel, crafted by the New York-based jewelers, Carvin French, and an exceptional testament to a natural treasure. With over 200 diamonds, ranging in color from Intense Pink to Red, it represents the best the Argyle mine has to offer. Coinciding with the imminent closure of the Argyle mine, the auctioning of this bracelet represents an opportunity, soon to disappear, to acquire these iconic diamonds.
