AUGUSTUS JOHN, R.A.
MAGNOLIA WITH LEAVES IN A BOWL
oil on canvas
66 by 53.5cm.; 26 by 21in.
The canvas appears original. There is a faint stretcher bar mark running along the upper edge. There are fine lines of craquelure to a small number of isolated areas, including to the leaves in the upper left quadrant, the red pigment in the lower left quadrant and to a white petal just to the right of centre. There are fine lines of reticulation to the red pigments in the dish, with one or two associated specks of loss. There is light surface dirt in places and one or two minor instances of surface matter. This excepting, the work appears in good overall condition.
Inspection under ultraviolet light is rendered difficult by the varnish but there are no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching.
The work is held in a carved and moulded wooden frame.
