PORTRAIT D'UN PAYSAN

Signed Luce (lower left)

Oil on canvas

18⅛ by 13⅛ in. (46 by 33.3 cm)

Framed: 23 by 17⅞ in. (58.4 by 45.4 cm)

Condition Report

The canvas is unlined. There is a slight undulation to the canvas throughout. There is minor pigment shrinkage to the figure's face, hat and chest, and fine lines of hairline craquelure to the background. There are artist's pinholes to the upper left, lower left and lower right corners. There is a pindot sized loss to the upper left corner, and nailhead-sized spots of pigment loss to the lower left and lower right corners, likely due to frame abrasion. There is a circular area of abrasion toward the upper left corner. There is a single pindot loss to the upper half of the right edge, and a second, 1/2 inch loss to the center of the right edge where the canvas has separated. Under UV light: some original pigments fluoresce but no inpainting is apparent. The work is in overall good condition.
