Reference 3970 was made in four series between 1986 and 2004. The first examples featured a snap-on case back and can be seen as the logical successor to the reference 2499. Within two years of the model's launch, the case back was revised to a screw-down water-resistant type back, as in the present lot.
The present lot typifies the platinum reference 3970, with its black dial and diamond set numerals. The reference 3970, along with its predecessors the 2499 and 1518, holds a significant position in the eyes of complicated Patek Philippe watch collectors today. Reference 3970 was discontinued and replaced by reference 5970 in 2004.
