Heuer began to produce its tide indication chronographs in the 1950s for a retailer of outdoor and camping equipment. Originally marketed as the "Seafarer," Solunagraphs specifically appealed to adventurers and outdoors men due to the register displaying tide indications on the dial. This complication is based on John Alden Knight's "solunar theory," which suggests that fisherman, huntsmen and sailors could determine the best dates and times to hunt and fish based on tide patterns.

The outdoor retailer Orvis commissioned Heuer to produce their own model of the Seafarer. While the model previously had been marketed under other names, Heuer specifically marketed models retailed by Orvis as the Solunagraph. The Solunagraphs are double signed on the dial by both Orvis and Heuer.
