EDGAR DEGAS

1834 - 1917

SINGER AT A CAFÉ-CONCERT (DELTEIL 53; ADHÉMAR 33; REED & SHAPIRO 26)

Lithograph, 1876-77, Reed & Shapiro's first state of two, one of at least 14 impressions, on wove paper

image: 255 by 192 mm 10 by 7½ in

sheet: 291 by 220 mm 11½ by 8¾ in

Ex coll. Richard H. Zinser, and with his inkstamp on the verso (not yet in Lugt)

Nicholas Stogdon has noted that “this may in fact be the first lithograph Degas made, and it appears to be the only one drawn directly on to a stone.” Evocative of many important late 19th c. images, it most likely was the inspiration for Toulouse-Lautrec’s color lithograph published in L’Estampe Originale in 1894.
