WRITTEN ON THE DAY OF HIS ARRIVAL IN NEW YORK, describing his rapturous welcome there, announcing that he has been mobbed by the crowds and that he has taken refuge on the ship again ("...heute hier angekommen, von einer unübersetzbaren Meute verfolgt...wir sitzen nun auf dem Schiff, unserem Zufluchtsort...")

Einstein and his wife embarked on the Belgenland at Antwerp on 2 December 1930 to sail to California, where he was visiting fellow at the Pasadena Institute of Technology. When the ship stopped off at New York, Einstein was besieged by the press and lionized by all New York. He was obliged to return to the ship each evening to escape the hundreds of people who wished to speak to him.
