Description

VIGNOLA, GIACOMO BAROZZI DA AND MARC PIOCHE, SIEUR DE LAVERGNE

Two architectural works in one volume, comprising:

VIGNOLA. Reigles des cinq ordres d’architecture. Traduction nouvelle. Paris: Pierre Mariette, 1653, woodcut title-page containing a portrait of the author, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut illustrations, title-page soiled and and frayed

LAVERGNE. Livre nouveau de l'art d'architecture des cinques ordres... reveu par Jean Marot. Paris: Pierre Bernard, [c. 1655], engraved title-page, 37 engraved plates (complete?), one plate crudely repaired

2 works in one volume, folio (382 x 248mm.), modern cloth, some staining and tearing

Both works are rare; there is a copy of the 1653 Vignola in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and an incomplete one in the University of Delaware. Worldcat lists six copies of the second work.

Under BAL RIBA 3447, which gives a list of editions of Vignola, this is no. 41. The Macclesfield copy of Lavergne had 34 plates (with images numbered 1-39), whereas this copy has 37 unnumbered plates.
