FIRST EDITION, 4to (220 x 153mm.), woodcut device, capitals and ornaments, contemporary red morocco elaborately gilt with arms of Cardinal Colonna, including small cannon and flag tools, spine gilt in compartments, red-gilt pastedowns, gilt edges, occasional light browning, foot of spine chipped


The flourishes surrounding the armorial on the binding are the same as those on a book printed in Rome in 1695, illustrated in Legatura romana barocca 1565-1700, plate 78, not assigned to a particular workshop.


PROVENANCE:

Cardinal Carlo Colonna (1665-1739), arms on binding; Libraria Colonna, red stamp on title-page and at end; extract from an English sale catalogue pasted to front flyleaf

Cardinal Colonna is best known for his patronage of Handel.
