Description

JACOPONE DA TODI

Laude... devote & utele a consolatione de le persone devote e spirituale. (Venice: Bernardino Benali, 5 December 1514)

4to (198 x 136mm.), woodcut initials and illustrations, nineteenth-century half vellum, stamp removed from foot of title-page,

Jacopone da Todi was a thirteenth-century Franciscan known for his erratic behaviour and ascetic tendencies, but also as the author of satirical and popular devotional poetry. Numerous manuscripts of his poems survive, and they were first printed in Florence in 1490. The woodcuts show St Francis receving the stigmata and Jesus preaching.
