Description

FIRRUFINO, JULIO CÉSAR

El perfeto artillero. Madrid: Juan Martin de Barrio, 1642 (1648)

folio (343 x 240mm.), full-page engraved armorial of Philip IV, engraved title-page by Juan de Noort, engraved portrait of the author, woocut initials, head- and tailpieces, woodcut and engraved illustrations, contemporary limp Spanish vellum, lacking engraved section title "Fragmentos mathematicos", paper flaw in the margin of M2, small hole in R4 with slight loss, slight staining at beginning, foredge stained and frayed towards end with some loss of paper, binding stained, lacking 2 pairs of ties

RARE. While the title-page is dated 1642, the book was not printed until 1648 because the Spanish authorities did not want Firrufino to reveal any military secrets. Firrufino, a teacher of mathematics, engineering and artillery, had previously written a brief work on artillery, here much expanded and updated. The portrait of Firrufino is flanked by those of Euclid and Archimedes.
