Description

AESCHYLUS

Τραγωδιαι εξ. Tragoediae sex [edited by Franciscus Asulanus]. Venice: in the house of Aldus and Andrea Torresano, 1518

8vo (159 x 92mm.), woodcut printer's device on title-page and verso of final leaf, text in Greek, later calf, a1 and o9-10 laid down (Aldine device at end obscured), o5-6 misbound, a few leaves at end repaired at foredge, occasional light staining (heavy at end)

The first printed edition of the Greek text of Aeschylus' plays, in the Greek italic type commissioned by Aldus, cut by Francesco Griffo and based on the writing of Marcus Musurus. Renouard notes that the manuscript Asulanus used for this edition was defective, lacking the end of Agamemnon and the beginning of Coephores, so that he mistakenly conflated the two into a single play.
