First edition of Whitman's first separate publication 

Though Whitman himself was a proponent of temperance in his early days, he later in life found this piece embarrassing. Quite sentimental in its tone, it was written at the request of Park Benjamin (the editor of the Extra Series of The New World), and at a time when temperance societies were appearing across America.
