8vo (4 1/2 x 7 1/8 in.; 114 x 180 mm). Minor toning, a few stray spots. Original textured dark blue-green cloth, covers stamped in blind with central wreath motif, spine gilt lettered with floral motif, brown coated endpapers; very slight rubbing to corners, minor toning and spotting to edges. In custom quarter green silk over marbled board clamshell case.  


First edition, one of 1,450 copies printed (Borst)


One of Thoreau's "excursion books," the present volume contains the essays "Ktaadn," "Chesuncook," and "The Allegash and East Branch." Additionally, it includes a brief appendix that contains Thoreau's notes on the varieties of plants and animals one might encounter in the Maine woods, as well as some suggestions about proper attire for the region, and a helpful glossary of Native American phrases.
