8vo. 12 full page wood engravings, errata leaf; some spotting. Publisher's cloth with gilt-lettered leather spine label; front hinge weak, block loosening.
First edition. A wide-ranging account of Stockell's adventures at sea, including an encounter with Nelson's fleet at Trafalgar, voyages to the Caribbean, India, south-east Asia, cruises up the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, Greenland and the Arctic. He recounts engagements with pirates, whaling expeditions (one with Scoresby), and shipwrecks (the last of which saw him as the sole survivor).
rare. We can find only a single copy at auction over the last century and that example was rebound.
