16mo (3 1/8 x 4 3/4 in.; 80 x 121 mm). Some foxing. Publisher’s pebble-grain dark green cloth, front cover with black paper label decoratively lettered in gilt, tan endpapers; spine slightly faded, inner front hinge with small split at bottom. In custom green quarter morocco over pebble-grain cloth slipcase and folding chemise.  


First edition, first printing, the third and final instalment of Hawthorne's Grandfather's Chair series


The contemporary gift inscription reads: "George Scheltky Richardson | April 25th 1841. | aged 10 ten years. | The gift of the Benevolent, | and Kind Friend | Mrs. John A. Lowell". Elizabeth Lowell was the second wife of the Hon. John Amory Lowell, and the grandmother of Percival, Abbott Lawrence, and Amy Lowell. She and her husband were renowned philanthropists.
