BIBLE IN LATIN (THE SALAMANCA BIBLE)

3 volumes in one, folio (11 1/8 x 8 in.; 283 x 203 mm). Title-page vignette, woodcut initials, some historiated, text in two columns; some contemporary ink markings, minor marginal dampstaining, stray spotting, tear to upper corner of I:Rr5, closed marginal tear to I:Yy8, closed marginal tear to II:L6, one or two instance of marginal worming, some toning. Contemporary vellum, covers panelled with blind fillets, gilt fleuron ornaments in corners of inner frame, central gilt arabesque enclosing Crucifixion scene and letters "IHS", spine with central gilt tool repeated in compartments; some yellowing and staining, some wrinkling, lacking ties.
An extraordinary edition of the Latin Bible printed in counter-reformation Spain, by Lyonnais printers. The present edition includes the reformed Zurich version alongside the Vulgate. This represents of one four editions of the Bible to be printed in Spain in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the only one to hold the the Zurich version. The scholia based on François Vatable's Sorbonne lectures are added, and the whole prepared under the auspices of the theologians of Salamanca, with the approval of the Inquisition, signed at the end in ink by "Roman de Vallezillo, Commissario de Inquisition, June 1586".
