8 volumes, 8vo (9 1/2 x 6 in.; 241 x 153 mm). Condition varies. Publisher's green cloth, spines with gilt vignettes and lettering, covers blindstamped; condition varies, some spines faded.


This run of Putnam's Monthly Magazine includes eight contributions by Melville, beginning in November 1853. These include Israel Potter (the entire novel in nine installments), "Bartelby, the Scrivener," "The Encantadas," "The Lightening Rod," "The Bell Tower," "Benito Cereno," "The Apple Tree Table," and "I and My Chimney." Also included are first printings of Emerson, Longfellow, Thoreau, and others.
