8vo. Inscribed by Emerson on a preliminary blank; minor toning, minor foxing to preliminary leaves. Original cream cloth, gilt fern motif to upper cover, spine gilt-lettered, top edge gilt brown coated endpaper; some toning and minor spoling, spine sunned, nick to head of spine. In black watered silk slipcase.
First edition, presentation copy, inscribed: "J.M. Cheney | with the respects of | R.W. Emerson | December 1849"
Only 100 copies (of the 2,000 printed) were about in cream cloth, apparently for presentation purposes.
