Preliminary leaf "New Novels...", half-title, illustration on p. 105, final leaf with printer's device; light spotting, spine cracked at center of text block, a few gatherings loose. Publisher's red cloth, stamped in gilt and black, cream coated endpapers; some rubbing, small stain to lower board, tail-piece slightly frayed. Housed in a half-morocco clamshell case. 

The true first edition of the author's classic novel, preceding the American edition by six months. The text varies slightly.
