Description

The Property of a Gentleman

CLEMENS, SAMUEL L.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). London: Chatto & Windus, 1884

8vo (7 ¼ x 4 ¾ in.; 186 x 120 mm). Half-title with list of author's works on verso, frontispiece and 173 illustrations by E. W. Kemble, publisher's 32 pp. catalogue at end dated October 1884; very minor spotting, loss to corner of terminal page of publisher's catalogue (not affecting text). Publisher's red pictorial cloth, stamped in gilt and black, decorative ochre leaf endpapers, binding A; spine lightly faded, minor soiling to rear cover, cloth turn-in slightly lifting at lower rear cover. Housed in a red cloth slipcase.

First edition, preceding the American by a few days. BAL's state A of the sheets (no priority given). The main textual difference between this edition and the first American is the appearance of the definite article in the title (which Clemens had objected to).
