Condition Report

Original unlined condition. The work presents beautifully and maintains fresh colors. There is extremely faint craquelure and a horizontal stretcher bar mark running parallel to the upper edge; a minor 1 inch scratch at upper left; a faintly visible 4 inch sideways '2' shaped repair on the rock at lower left (with some associated lifting); and frame abrasion scattered at the edges, with associated discoloration along the upper and right edges (the latter from discolored inpainting). Under UV: varnish fluoresces green. There is brushy inpainting to the '2' shaped repair; a 1/2 inch dot of inpainting in the sky at upper left (visible to naked eye); inpainting to address prior frame abrasion along left upper and right edges; and a small line of inpainting to address prior craquelure at the upper right edge. Ready to hang in its current state.

Catalogue Note

The Danish painter Janus La Cour was drawn to the Swiss Alps for their majesty and tranquility, and he particularly liked to study the contrast between the lower valleys with their warmer temperatures and palettes and the cooler hues of the snow-capped peaks beyond. The present lot features Engstlenalp, a high alp in the Bernese Highlands known for its beautiful lake views.
