The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This work has not been recently restored. The canvas has an old lining. The painting is quite dirty. Some abrasion during previous cleaning has weakened the color in the background on the left around the profile of the hair and face, in the left side of the face itself, and around the eyes and mouth. These restorations are not visible under ultraviolet light due to the heavy varnish. They would be removed if the painting were cleaned, exposing some of this thinness. There are some more recent restorations in the golden lining of the sleeve in the lower center, which are visible under ultraviolet light. The work can either be hung in its current state, or be properly cleaned and accurately retouched. For a full treatment report, please contact the department.
