STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS

Treasure Island. Cassell & Company, Limited, 1883

8vo, FIRST EDITION, half-title, frontispiece map, 4pp. advertisements at the end (code "5G-783"), original sage-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, black-coated endpapers, preserved in quarter green morocco folding box (broken), slight edge-wear to cloth, corners slightly bumped

A NEAR FINE COPY OF THE GREATEST MARITIME ADVENTURE STORY SINCE DEFOE'S "ROBINSON CRUSOE". The first edition was issued in various colours of cloth. Treasure Island had originally been serialized (under the pseudonym Captain George North) in Young Folks between October 1881 and January 1882. Remarkably it attracted little attention, but when it was published in book form as here in November 1883 it attracted a chorus of praise and has never been out of print since, as well as inspiring countless dramatic, cinematic and television adaptations, together with sequels and musicals.
