[POTTER, BEATRIX]

"The chimney stack stood up above the roof like a little stone tower..."

A preliminary drawing by Beatrix Potter, used as the basis for one of the coloured plates in The Roly-Poly Pudding (later titled The Tale of Samuel Whiskers). It has been noted that this picture, which Potter liked, was included in the book to counteract the effect of "a string of sooty inside pictures". In this preliminary version, but not in the published composition, some birds are observed by a white kitten.

This item is accompanied by a reproduction of the printed drawing. Both were published in the Dulwich Picture Gallery catalogue.
