tall 8vo, FIRST EDITION, one of 500 copies, original printed light brown wrappers in the form of an official government envelope, with flap bearing the representation of a seal, the front cover serving as the title-page, lacking red tie, fraying and tears to wrappers (one affecting title), rust-marks from staples, dust-staining

This collection of satirical verses on the official community in India (some of which had first appeared in a series in the Civil and Military Gazette from February to April 1886) is the first book entirely written by Kipling. Because of this, and the fact that he was solely responsible for its publication, he considered it his first book, as recorded in his contribution to My First Book, edited by Jerome K. Jerome in 1894.
