Four albums of 962 photographs showing the first world war. [Early twentieth century]
Oblong folio (350 x 495mm.), 962 silver prints (average 165 x 118mm., or the reverse), mounted recto and verso on thick card mounts, each volume with manuscript index in French listing and describing all photographs, contemporary maroon pebbled cloth, a few photographs becoming detached, index leaves detached in one volume, bindings slightly rubbed
A FINE COLLECTION, showing military personnel, trenches, lazarets, town views, battle fronts, equipment and production, civilians, etc.
Many locations are captured, including: Algeria, Belgium, Greece, Macedonia, France, especially Somme, Verdun, Champagne, Paris, Marseilles, Alsace and Toulon. Furthermore, the albums portray key historical figures such as: Albert I of Belgium, field marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, general Sir Bryan Mahon, French general Joseph Joffre, French general Maurice Sarrail, among others.
