Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900), was the second son of Queen Victoria. He spent his life in the navy and in 1888, when this box was fashioned, he was Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean (Nelson's own post at the time of his death). At this time the Victory was undergoing major repairs in Portsmouth after a catastrophic leak.
