Description
From the Collection of Judy Taylor, MBE
ARDIZZONE, EDWARD
Three "Snodgrass" letters, comprising:
i) "Dear Snodgrass", with decorated "D" drawing, 74 by 52mm. [together with] ii) "My dear Snooks", with decorated "M" drawing, 54 by 50mm., on single leaf, signed with initials "EA" lower right, mounted, framed and glazed, some light browning; iii) "Horrible Snodgrass", with drawing of three ladies in corsets, 85 by 116mm., on single leaf, some light browning and creases
Judy Taylor, in her edition of Ardizzone's Sketches for Friends (London, 2000), notes that "in 1959, for his own amusement, Edward Ardizzone began a series of illustrated letters to Mr Snodgrass, an imaginary (and extremely inefficient) publicity manager for a firm of corset manufacturers, Comfi-Corsets." The present letters are supposedly from J. Entwistle, John Podsnap and Ebenezer Small.
PROVENANCE:
items i) and ii) The Mayor Gallery, July 1980
