4to, FIRST EDITION, parallel English and French text, woodcut border on verso of title page, woodcut end-pieces, contemporary Scottish binding in panelled calf gilt, covers with gilt and blind borders, inner border with cornerpieces of gilt thistles enclosing central design of four linked thistles, two of them surmounted by crown (symbol of the Scottish 'Order of the Thistle'), spine and corners repaired, possibly recased, occasional minor damp-staining, a few small marginal tears
First edition of Wodroephe's French grammar for English soldiers based in the Netherlands, specifically members of the British forces serving on behalf of the States General under Prince Maurice of Orange against the Spanish army. A shortened London edition appeared in 1625.
