Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF) offers hope and opportunity to Nepal’s most impoverished children by providing them what is every child’s birth right: vital healthcare, education and a safe environment. One of the areas of focus for NYF has been Kamlari girls – girls effectively sold as slaves. In the Dang District in western Nepal, many indigenous families from the Tharu ethnic group subsist as farm laborers. Unable to make ends meet, they have been forced into a desperate trade of selling their daughters to work far from home as bonded servants in private homes or as dishwashers in tea houses. Some of these children are as young as six.

Over 20 years, NYF and its founder Olga Murray have rescued 20,000 girls and succeeded in virtually eradicating the Kamlari practice, through innovative programs and awareness raising. NYF is now embarking on a new project – building a lodge for rescued Kamlari girls so that they can stay in Kathmandu and take up training through NYF’s Vocational Education and Career Counseling Center (VECC). The VECC sponsors children in training programs for 20 different careers, supports them through the career decision process and helps them to find employment following the completion of their training.

Thanks to a generous donation, NYF is able to buy land next to the VECC for the lodge, however funds are still desperately needed for the construction and fit-out of the lodge. So, please help NYF to help these girls have a brighter future.
