Carroll Dunham is known for his paintings of cartoonish, humanoid forms incorporating sexual and digestive organs in direct, humorous compositions. Accumulator Three (3.22.01) depicts a man in profile with a bulbous nose and chin suggesting male genitalia. Surrounding this figure are floral and geometric patterns, referencing Gauguin and even Matisse. Yet, the central figure calls to mind Philip Guston in its wholly original machination, furthered by the seeming tension in its expression. Writing of a Dunham show that opened in 1993, the critic Holland Cotter observed: “the qualities that defined Guston's work – an appetite for the grotesque blended with keen sensitivity to the processes of painting – also apply to Mr. Dunham's new paintings. He couldn't have picked a better model, and he's doing it proud” (Holland Cotter, “Art In Review” in New York Times, March 5, 1993).
