Thomas Schütte began his career in the late 1970s by studying under renowned German artist Gerhard Richter. Since then, he has continuously subverted traditional art historical genres through his eclectic creation of sculptures, installations, watercolors, drawings, photographs, and prints. Schütte makes familiar forms of expression, like memorial portraiture and figurative sculpture, peculiar through overt alterations. In doing so, Schütte explores themes such as the vulnerability of the individual within an increasingly complex and chaotic world. Here, a woman, her undergarments visible, stares at the viewer. Something is decidedly off about her expression, but is purposefully hard to pinpoint. Quick but assured strokes of watercolor in the background suggest the presence of a landscape.
