Condition report

This work is in very good condition overall. The canvas has been mounted on stretched fabric, per the artist's specifications. There are tonal and textural shifts throughout due to the artist's chosen media. There is minor undulation and minor lifting and loose fibers at the corners and edges of the canvas, inherent to the artist's media and working method. There are three minute areas of linear pigment separation, visible upon close inspection. There is dust present at the crevices of the impasto. Under ultraviolet light, there is no evidence of restoration. Unframed.

Catalogue note

“Suddenly and dramatically, a former follower of the Washington Color School emerged as having broken loose from the 'flat color areas' style, and as an original painter in his own right."

 - Andrew Hudson, Artforum 6.7, "Washington," March 1968, p. 63

Sam Gilliam is an innovative colorist who, by cutting and rearranging geometric shapes from thickly painted canvases, expanded his experiments in color and improvisation. Gilliam’s solo exhibition last year at the Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland and his current exhibition at Dia Beacon is an indication of the recent surge in appreciation of the artist’s oeuvre.
