“Although she was raised under various influences and shaped by many circumstances, Niki is above all herself, namely a surprising and explosive mixture - the product of various forces which were never so much inheirited as refashiones; the product also of various tensions which never so much ruled her as fed her creativity. To paraphrase the Maréchal of France who was snubbed by the Restoration nobles, Niki ‘has no ancestor, she IS an ancestor’, in the sense that she inheirited from no one her ability to make herself, but will leave a fabulous inheiritance to others.”
