8vo (221 x 140mm.), FIRST BOOK EDITION, 40 wood-engraved illustrations by Marcus Stone, 36pp. publisher's advertisements at the end of volume 1 (dated January 1865), 4pp. advertisements at the end of volume 2 (dated November 1865), original dark reddish-brown sand-grain cloth, covers decorated in blind with thick arch-frames, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, pale yellow endpapers, some slight edge-wear to bindings, slightly nicked at head and base of spines, joints and hinges of volume 1 slightly worn and staring, slight stain on spine of volume 1
