THE WASAYA (RECOMMENDATIONS) OF IMAM ‘ALI TO HIS SON HUSAYN, COPIED BY MUHAMMAD ZAMAN AL-HUSAYNI, PERSIA, SAFAVID, DATED 1095 AH/1683 AD


Arabic manuscript on orange paper, 13 leaves, written in naskh in white ink, later mounted on thick gold-sprinkled cardboard of various colours, in leather gilt-stamped binding with filigree doublures


23.5 by 16.5cm.

The colophon states that Muhammad Zaman al-Husayni copied this Wasaya of Imam ‘Ali to his son Husayn on 9 Muharram 1095 AH (28 December 1683 AD), copying directly from a manuscript written by the great Yaqut Musta’simi dated 680 AH (1281-82 AD). Another copy of the same text was sold at Christie’s London, 2 May 2019, lot 64. A Qur’an by Muhammad Zaman al-Husayni al-Kirmani dated 1076 AH (1665-66 AD) was sold in these rooms, 15 April, 1985, lot 223.
