FRANK TENNEY JOHNSON
1874 - 1939
THE OLD GRAY MARE
signed Frank Tenney Johnson and dated 1919 (lower left)
oil on canvas
22 x 15 inches (55.9 x 38.1 cm)
This work has been quite broadly restored in the sky, around the edges, and in the mountains in the distance. There appears to have been two campaigns of retouching. The first one was probably done at the same time that the lining was applied on the reverse. This can be easily seen around the edges where broad and sloppy retouching has been applied about ¼ inch on each side when the work was extended. At this time, the retouches applied had noticeably discolored. The second restorer tried to correct the color of the initial retouches but these second retouches also discolored. Both of these separate restorations can be safely removed.
The signature seems to be old. Although the sky shows quite darkly under ultraviolet light suggesting broad restorations, overall the condition throughout the work is good. If properly cleaned, the sky will change noticeably and may show that the artists did not originally include so much blue in the sky.
