1877 - 1943
STILL LIFE WITH CONCH SHELL
signed MARSDEN/HARTLEY and dated 1929 (on the reverse prior to lining)
oil on canvas
15 ¼ by 18 ¼ inches
(38.7 by 46.4 cm)
This painting will be included by Gail R. Scott in the forthcoming Marsden Hartley Legacy Project: The Complete Paintings and Works on Paper, Bates College Museum of Art.
The canvas is wax-lined and the edges are trimmed. There appears to be frame abrasion along the extreme edges with a few associated traces of gilt and minor fine surface cracking in a few areas of thicker impasto. The work may be slightly dirty. Under UV: there is one small spot of inpainting in the upper left quadrant, two small spots in the upper right corner, and one small spot near the right edge at center.
